My research embraces marine ecology and biogeochemistry and
revolves around the effects of environmental change on carbon and nutrient cycling in benthic communities.
I combine in situ field observations with an experimental and modelling approach.
Research areas range from Antarctic and Arctic shelf systems to offshore windfarms in the North Sea.

The west-Antarctic Peninsula coastal areas are very productive, yet experiencing advanced glacial melt and sea ice retreat due to climate warming. We study responses of benthic ecosystems and the effect on carbon and nutrient cycling to the alterations in the water column.

The Arctic Ocean is warming very fast.
We investigate how changing sea ice cover and increased glacial melt affect benthic ecosystems. |
To meet renewable energy demands, offshore windfarms are constructed in large areas of the North Sea.
We investigate the effects of the presence of these windfarms on the seafloor habitat.
